No More Visas For Immigrants

Spain is planning to limit the number of work visas issued to non-eu immigrants reducing it to virtually zero during 2009.  There is even talk of offering unemployed immigrants money to go back home.

This will primarily apply to low-skilled jobs such as waiters, rubbish collectors etc. but even electricians, bricklaying and other such skilled jobs will also be targeted.  Spain has been hard hit by the crisis as it relies so heavily on the construction industry which is evidenced with the rising unemployment rate which is over 11 per cent and may reach as high as 15 per cent next year.

No doubt this is just the beginning of similar measures that are to come.  Luckily for those from the EU this rule does not apply, but those looking to move to Spain in the coming few years better make sure more than ever that they are not going to have to rely on the state for help.

Illegal Builds in Spain...

For those who don't already know, there are properties in Spain without the proper planning permission.

They have been in the news for the past few years and these illegal builds, can with little notice, be bulldozed with as little as 48 hours notice; traumatic as you can imagine.

How can this happen in a civilized society?

First and foremost people take risks. There are two specific areas during the purchase that identify a weakness. A poor solicitor, who deliberately turns a blind eye to suspect planning applications; and advice from a solicitor to a prospective buyer, who then themselves choose to carry on with the build regardless of potential problems.

The fraudulent Spanish lawyer cum solicitor, who surprisingly uses the language barrier as one reason for any errors, and the other reasons base themselves around communication errors with planning authorities.
